Seeing Black, White and Red All Over

February 23, 2017

As I was seeking inspiration for a recent project I noticed that I had taken a series of photos from Paris to Ft. Lauderdale with a similar color theme.  Is black, white and red an emerging trend? And could it be right for my next project? See how I take the beauty I see around me and turn it into design inspiration.

Asbury skateboard park

If I was young, cool, and in great shape this is where I would be.  The historic Asbury Park Carousel building is now a skateboard park.  I wonder if Bruce Springsteen likes it! I found the juxtaposition of elegant retro windows and modern mural art fresh and inspiring.

Boylston Street Doorway

This Boylston Street doorway recalls the Richmond-designed McKenzie Childs pots I love. I’m always amazed by how combining three simple shades in classic geometric shapes can look so modern when done in the right way.

B Square Resstaurant in Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Located on the very chic Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, this table at B Square restaurant had me feeling like a princess.  Not bad for a burger and beer joint.

Parisian graffiti

This Parisian graffiti is certainly dramatic and attention-grabbing. Beyond the emotion, the juxtaposition of hard and soft lines as well as bold strokes on stark white gives me lots of inspiration for edgy home decor.

Paris Flea Market Tile

Cement tile is definitely an emerging trend. The layout of this tile in a Paris flea market was stylish, charming, and quirky all at the same time.

mood board for Richmond design space

Drawing on all this rich inspiration, I created this concept board for an edgy new event space in Richmond, Virginia. The classic colors leave plenty of room for fun with texture and pattern. The right risks in timeless tones create a design concept that will feel fresh and modern for years to come.
