A Handsome trend for fall: leather

2024 has us specifying more leather than in years past.  We are also seeing an increase in leather furnishings from our vendors.  Some of this could be the texture contrast with it and the very popular boucle fabrics in abundance out there.

Designing with leather is a whole other animal (pun intended)!  The hides come in a variety of sizes and can have all sorts of character markings—bug bites, barb scratches and more—that need we need to cut around.  Many details are used to enhance the leather and work into the potential size limitations in upholstery. These are some of our favorite leather looks.

Stitching Detail

Stitching

Stitch details are often incorporated into the design to accommodate cutting the leather in smaller pieces than you would fabric.

Stitch Detail and Nailheads

Nailheads

Nailheads added to the stitching detail can give a very handsome and tailored look to the furniture.

Top Stitch

Contrast Top Stitch

A contrasting longer top stitch creates a more casual look.

Fabric & Leather

Clever Idea

We love combining richly textured fabrics with leather, especially when we use the leather on the outer “shell”. These dining chairs have a welcoming look and the leather brings the very traditional table style into a newer, more refreshing style category.

Nailheads and a Fabric Combination

Any chance I get to incorporate nailheads I jump on!  They are the perfect finishing touch on most leather pieces.

Tufting-Classic

Classic

You will often see classic tufting in leather furniture.  This will the piece an elegant, gentlemanly look.

Tufting-Biscuit

Contemporary

I have no idea how “biscuit tufting” got it’s name!  You can’t eat it, but it does give your leather a more contemporary look.

Channel Tufting

Retro

This banquette has a retro look, thanks to the channel-style tufting.

Lived-in Leather

Wrinkles and Wear

Leather wears differently than fabric.  It will “sag” with use.  You will notice a ripple in your seat cushions.  This doesn’t change the comfort of the cushion, just the look.

Breather Panel

Perforations

Because leather is not porous, it is important that our manufacturer adds a breather panel on the under and backsides of the cushions.  That way the air will be able to release when you sit, just like a fabric-covered cushion.  That panel can be fabric or perforated leather.
