designing for kids of all ages

We like designing rooms for kids of all ages… grandkiddies too!   We provide both  practical and creative elements to create spaces that are safe, stimulating, and conducive to growing up. Here are the key factors we think about:

1. Functionality

It’s important to have spaces that serve a purpose, but also can be cleaned up up easily. These “sister” desks started as craft areas and evolved into homework stations over the years.  If things get messy you can close the doors and make it all disappear!

2. Storage

Incorporate ample storage solutions to keep the room organized. This helps teach kids the importance of cleanliness and organization.  Ensure that everything in the room is accessible to the child, promoting independence.

3. Flexibility and Growth Considerations

Create a flexible space that can be easily adapted as the child's interests and needs evolve.  This space will easily convert from play time to learning time. Plan for the future by incorporating elements that can be easily updated or replaced as the child grows.  We designed the table top to be adjustable in height.

4. Color and Design

Choose a color scheme that is bright, cheerful, and age-appropriate. Consider themes or motifs that align with the child's interests, but keep in mind that these preferences may change over time.

5. Comfort

Comfortable furnishings that are practical are essential.  This teen study room has a cushy chair and ample desk space to spread out and work.

6. Interactive Elements

We designed this space to look attractive as it is a main room in the house.  For now it is an indoor play set and fort.  In a few years the slide and steps will be removed and you have two built in desks!

7. Personalization

Allow the child to have input in the room's design, encouraging a sense of ownership.  Here we allowed the grandchildren to choose from a limited selection of prints for their bunk curtains.

8. Durability-game corner

Choose durable materials that can withstand the wear and tear associated with children's activities.  These game chairs will get heavy use and the leatherette fabric can handle it. Opt for easily washable fabrics and surfaces for easy clean-up.
