TIPS AND TRICKS TO TIDY UP YOUR SPACE AND KEEP IT ORGANIZED WITHOUT TRYING
Now that we are spending so much more time inside, it seems like our house tends to be messier every day… or maybe we just notice it more!
Have you ever spent the day organizing and cleaning only to wake up two days later feeling like you could spend another afternoon doing it all over again?
If that happens to you, you might want to dedicate one afternoon organizing your space on a deeper level so that you don’t run into the same issues over and over.
These tips and tricks will not only tidy up your space now, but make it easy to keep it organized in the future.
1. MAKE SURE EVERYTHING HAS ITS OWN PLACE
You might have heard that one before since it is Marie Kondo’s number one tip: every little thing needs to have a specific place in the house.
There is no space for loose keys, mail, small objects laying on surfaces.
First go around your house and pick up everything that is just “laying” there without a specific place. Once collected, separate what can be thrown away and what needs a new favorite spot. When doing that, think of its usage. Do you use it with something else? Then place both objects next to each other. How often do you need it? Make inventory of what you use frequently and keep these objects very accessible.
Avoid pilling things up in cabinets. This will only make items harder to reach and make putting them back difficult, leaving to you leaving them out again.
Don’t leave anything out. Add baskets and trays that have a specific utility. This will provide you with empty surfaces that are WAY easier to clean and will make cleaning more appealing because you won’t have to clear the space first.
In your bathroom, putting together all your soaps, shampoos, and other containers in one basket instead of having them all on the counter or shower floor will make a big visual difference.
2. EMPTY THE DRAWER (OR THE BOWL)
Do you have one drawer or a bowl that collects all your loose objects? You know, the one you can barely close without everything collapsing? That is probably where you will find the key for the lock you lost a year ago, a broken zipper or the flyer for an event that was in 2018? We all have the magic drawer that not only is full of useless things but also brings us anxiety when we look at it.
Take this time to empty it! Be honest with yourself: do I really need this? If you do, find it a proper place that you can easily access. If you don’t even know what it is or you don’t need it anymore, do your future self a favor: Get rid of it. Now. Not Later. Today. Right now.
3. ORGANIZE THE INSIDE, TOO!
Use drawer dividers and label boxes inside drawers and on book shelves. Keeping things in separate compartments will not only invite you to put things back in their place but also will make it super clear for you and other people in the house on where to find stuff.
4. TUCK AWAY THE EXPOSED CORDS
Exposed cords by the TV, the nightstand, your office or any other places where you are plugged in can really disturb peace. Not only are exposed cords not visually appealing, but they also make it hard to clean surfaces.
Use cable sleeves or boxes to put all your cables together. You can also paint the box in the same color of your wall if you want to go the extra mile. Hanging the cables a little above the floor and hiding them behind a surface will also do the trick.
5. MAKE YOUR BED EVERY MORNING
Making your bed, arranging the couch’s pillows and storing blankets only takes a few minutes, yet it makes a huge difference on how the entire room looks.
It will also give you a sense of accomplishment first thing in the morning and will help you start the day on a good note, as demonstrated by Admiral William H. McRaven.
What if you could bring some peace and productivity in only 2 minutes each morning? Now is the perfect time to do a deep organization project in your house to make our future self’s life easier!
